Kairanga County Council

Mr. W. R. Hopcrott was in the chair at a meeting of the Kairanga County Council in Palmerston North yesterday. The county engineer (Mr. L. C. Pickering) reported inspecting several properties regarding the eradication of noxious weeds and was of the opinion that most farmers had done their best under existing conditions. Some, however, could have done better and he would approach them in the course of a further inspection., Regarding the Zone D patriotic appeal for 1944, a letter was received from Mr. J. C. Young, setting out that this year's target was to be £14,600, ol’ which amount it was hoped the Kairanga county could raise- £3600, Palmerston North city to furnish the remainder. The chairman reported that the council had taken over the patriotic shop for the week ending March 11 and had raised the sum of £149 12s 2d, £SO Is od of which came from raffles. A letter of thanks is to be sent to the various women's organisations which assisted in the effort, and thanks were conveyed to Mr. Pickering lor his work during the week. The engineer, m his report, stated that in the Taonui riding repairs to two land spans of Hoihere bridge had been carried out, new stringers having been put in and others strengthened. Decking was also lifted and relaid to suit transoms. Whilst the Kawau Stream was dry the opportunity to replace rotten sheathing was taken and minor repairs were also effected. Mangaone riding: Protection works on the banks of the Manawatu River at Te Matai had been carried out on the major break. .Metalling and road grading had been carried out in the Fitzherbert riding. The ranger s report showed that during the last month 750 dogs had been registered. From February 9 to March 13, 7S sheep and 37 mixed head of stock had been Impounded. The rate statement showed the following position:—Taonui: Struck £SS49 14s, paid to date £5209 8s 3d, outstanding £3640 5s 9d. Mangaone: Struck £5643 3s sd, paid to date £3012 4s lid, outstanding £2639 18s 6d. Fitzherbert: Struck £5292 13s lOd, paid to date £2952 16s 7d, outstanding £2339 17s 3d.
