Businessmen Confer

Mr. J. A. Nash presided at a meeting of the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce last night. Mr. C. V. Ciochetto was welcomed as a new member of the council. In reply to the chamber’s memorandum regarding pilfering of cargo, the Associated Chambers stated that the penalty was in the hands of the Magistracy within the limits of the penalties provided by Statute. So far as an amendment in the Statute to provide for heavier penalties was concerned, there did not appear to have been any question raised. Proven cases of pilfering were treated severely enough, but. the major task was to apprehend the culprits and bring them before the Court. The president, Mr. W. M. Sexton, was appointed to represent the chamber at a meeting to decide what form the “Aid to Russia Appeal” shall take. On the recommendation of the legislation committee, the chamber decided to ask the Associated Chambers to pursue the question of an amendment to the Shops and Offices Act in an endeavour to find a maximum salary beyond which no overtime can be claimed. It was decided to approach the City Council with the view of getting a weighbridge installed again in the Square.
