Failed to Locate Wandering Stock
The allegations of the Automobile Association (Manawatu) as to wandering stock on the highways in the Manawatu county were dealt with at yesterday’s meeting of the council when a further letter from the association was before the council. The county clerk (Mr. A. K. Drew) stated that the allegations had been referred to the Main Highways traffic inspector and also to the council’s by-law inspector (yMr. W. Berry). In his report Mr. Berry stated: “Mr. Drew lias shown me several letters from the Automobile Association (Manawatu) complaining about stock in the county but I have failed to locate any wandering stock in my travels. I got into touch with Inspector Fippard and we patrolled the main highway and county roads covering a distance of G 4 miles after dark and failed to find one animal oli the roads. I also went out to the Rongotea district one evening to have a look round and found no stock about.” The chairman (Cr. W. E. Barber) said that ho had explained the position respecting the council’s by-law inspector to the Automobile Association which was under a misapprehension as to Mr. Berry’s powers. Mr. Berry was not a • ranger and his duties were limited by the petrol restrictions. Nevertheless, by liis activities the roads were kept clear of wandering stock. The council resolved to reply to the Automobile Association in terms of Mr. Berry's report.
