High School Gala
Ideal weather conditions on Saturday assisted to make the gala day at the Boys’ High School a popular gathering, there being a large attendance. The total sum raised, with all expenses deducted, amounted to approximately £3OO. The chairman of the Parents’ Association (Mr. A. A. Langley) said that the function was assured of success before It started, as nearly £2OO had already been raised. Of this sum more than £62 came from a bottle drive held by the boys on Thursday and over £l2O was raised by the sale of lapel badges. The latter figure beat last year's record of £BO by more than £4O. Mr. Mansford, in addressing those present, said the funds raised were being used by the association to provide amenities at the school which were not provided by the Education Department. The City Silver Band, under the conductorship of Mr. J. B. Thomson, was in attendance. A feature was a display of drill by the school cadets. The gala was organised by Mr. Langley and entailed a great deal of work on the part of Mr. J. Murray (rector), the staff and pupils of the school. Side-sliows and competitions of all descriptions were conducted by the boys, while a number of stalls were run by members of..the association. A dance was held in the evening.
Members of the Manawatu branch of the National Council of Women yesterday took regretful leave of Mrs. W. J. Minogue, as a delegate from tho Post and Telegraph Women’s League, in view of her husband’s approaching retirement as Chief Postmaster. Mr. and Mrs. Minogue intend enjoying a well-earned holiday before settling down, probably in Christchurch.
