Pohangina County

Cr. S. J. St rah an was in the chair at the monthly meeting of the Poliangina County Council, when a letter was received from the Apiti Dairy Company stating that tho Umutol and Utuwai road improvement was much appreciated. The Kiwitea County Council advised that it was of tho opinion that no serious damage was taking place due to lupins in the Oroua River. Cr. W. McKay said he thought the Kiwitea Council was taking a shortsighted piew of the matter. A few pounds spent now would prevent anything serious later. Tho Kiwitea Council would regret not taking action now instead of in a few years’ time. The chairman said something might be done when the Soil Conservation Council came into operation. At a meeting of ratepayers for the election of tlve Poliangina Hall Committee, it was slated, Messrs N. H. Moar, J. T. Moar, J. D. Galvin, P. W. Balmer, R. V. Sinclair and G. Wagstaff had been elected. The committee was approved by the council. The Wellington Harbour Board advised that the election of members for the board would take place on May 20 and asked that tho rolls be prepared. For the Catchment Board, the clerk of the Oroua Council (Mr. R. HardI ing) recommended that a meeting be held i so that a nominee could be selected and thus avoid an election. This course was agreed to. The clerk was appointed returning officer. The treasurer reported that there was a credit balance of £12,224. The rate statement showed that of the total amount levied (£8223) £7827' had been collected, this being 95 per cent, of the amount levied. The overseer (Mr. Lewis) reported that the filling on the northern approach to the Piripiri bridge had snown signs of erosion and had been protected with two groynes, but the recent flood shows that further protection work was necessary. The erosion near the road above the bridge was urgently in need of protective work as the recent flood had taken more land.
