Notes of the Day
Congratulations upon his reelection to the Manawatu Licensing Committee were extended to Cr. P. G. Guy at Thursday’s meeting of the Feilding Borough Council. I A visitor to Feilding at the week-end I was Chief Steward Tom Howell, of the I British Mercantile Marine. The fourth j son of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Howell, ot I Wistaria Lodge, his homecoming after 17 years was a joyful event. “Almost as thick as snow” is the I description accorded the growth of mush ! rooms in the areas outside Feilding which i have benefited by the recent rains. One farmer stated that his paddocks were quite white the other morning when lie found an unusually fine crop of this early I autumn delicacy. j Bate collections in the borough of I Feilding were reported on at Thursday's meeting of the council when it was stated that 98 per cent, of the amount levied had .been paid. This constituted a record. However, the Mayor (Mr. T. L. Seddon) I pointed out that while the bulk of the council’s revenue was now in the credit ' balance would not carry the council very far into the next financial year. There was a good deal of discussion inFeilding on Saturday relative to the pro--1 posal to utilise portion of Denbigh Square as a children’s playground. One citizen recalled that the question was raised many years ago when a legal opinion was i obtained and this, it was stated, was ’ opposed to the intentions of the then council. It is understood that the posi- . tion is being closely examined in all its , legal aspects. 1 1 In his report on the activities of the works committee at Thursday's meeting of the Feilding Borough Council Cr. A. C. Buist indicated that it was unlikely that any further road sealing programme would be undertaken until the council l was assured of supplies of bitumen. A . contractor had been approached about certain additional sealing but had been unable tq. do the work owing to having a full programme elsewhere. Cr. Buist stated that steps were being taken to carry out essential maintenance work on certain of the sealed highways in the ■ borough. The metering of water heating service in the Feilding area which operated throughout last month for the first time has resulted in electricity costs for householdiers rising. In many instances to guard against a higher charge many households have developed the habit ol turning the switch off during certain hours. This action does not help the service which the Power Board undertook to provide but those possessing electric hot water services are not happy over the action taken by the board to provide a fresh tariff which means higher charges. Dairy farmers, too, are complaining.
