Conflicting Views of Duration of Pacific War
Received Sunday, 7.30 p.m. NEW YORK, March 12. “The Pacific war will last at least another two years, but If the European war is not ended by then it will take much longer,” said Lieutenant-Colonel Evans Carlson, leader of the famed raiders, in an interview In the New York Times. Colonel Carlson added: “We have just punctured the bulwark of tbe outer Japanese Army in China and Manchuria.” Commenting on the political conflicts In tho Far East, Colonel Carlson said; “The United Nations must work together. A good deal could be said to criticise each of them, including ourselves.” Colonel Carlson estimated the casualties in the recent Pacific fighting as 10 to one in favour of the Allies. The Research Institute of America, in a special bulletin, says: “The best inside opinion now is that the war with Germany will take longer than estimated but victory against Japan will come sooner than most believe. 4 4 This probable telescoping in time between the defeat of the two Axis Powers will upset all re conversion plans and might mean a period of dizzy deflation, crumbling values and largescale business inactivity and unemployment. ’ *
