Farrell Assumes Presidency of Argentina
Received Sunday, 6.30 p.m. BUENOS AIRES, March 11. General Farrell has assumed the Presidency of Argentina, succeeding General Ramirez, according to the Executive Secretary. The formal resignation of General Ramirez declares that high nationalistic army officers forced him to delegate his powers to General Farrell because of tbe false rumour that he intended to declare war on the Axis. General Ramirez said the opposition began when the army officers thought Argentina’s rupture with the Axis had resulted from pressure from the United Nations. The text of the resignation continues: “The die was cast. Intrigue was more power ful than reason.” A nationalist crowd carrying the Argentine, Spanish, Chilean, Paraguayan and Bolivian flags staged an anti-American demonstration in front of the American Embassy at Buenos Aires, says the Herald-Tribune’s correspondent. The demonstrators hissed and cried: “Down with the Yankees!” “Farrell, yes; traitors, no!” “Argentine, yes; Jews and Yankees, no!” Mounted police finally broke up the demonstration.
