Dean Gillespie, who is 69 years of age, is a Republican businessman and he defeated Air Force Major Carl Wuertell, aged 30, a wounded and retired Pacific soldier, in a normally Democratic district. It is pointed out that Republican Congressional candidates have won eight out of ten special elections since the general election in 1942.
