Another New Deal Defeat in Election
Received Thursday, 8.50 p.m. NEW YORK, March 9. Republican leaders hailed the election of Dean Gillespie of Denver (Colorado) to the House of Representatives as the climax to a series of tests indicating a broad sweep of public sentiment against the New Deal, says the New York Times’ Washington correspondent. Dean Gillespie, who is 69 years of age, is a Republican businessman and he defeated Air Force Major Carl Wuertell, aged 30, a wounded and retired Pacific soldier, in a normally Democratic district. It is pointed out that Republican Congressional candidates have won eight out of ten special elections since the general election in 1942.
