Shortage of Civilian Clothing Material
AMERICA FINDS DIFFICULTY IN SUPPLYING- DOMINIONS. Received Wednesday 9.50 p.m. NEW YORK, March 8. Treasury Procurement officials told textile manufacturers that unfilled fabric requirements for 1943 for LendLease shipments to Australia, New Zealand, North Africa, French West Africa and the Middle East exceed ninety million yards. The fabrics comprise mainly ordinary civilian clothing, shirting, dress materials and some industrial cloths which are needed to prevent the impairment of civilian economies in the countries mentioned. The Foreign Economic Administration Requirements Director (Mr. S. H. Lebensburger) said the delay was due to the increasingly tight supply of goods throughout America and the consequent difficulties in placing orders. He added that in the countries mentioned all textiles were rationed to a mere fraction of prewar consumption) and a further depreciation in civilian morale there might impair productive ability.
