Notes of the Day
Recently the Feilding R.S.A. resolved to compile a newsletter service for the benefit of members of the Forces Feilding' serving overseas. *The newsletter contains jottings of local happenings together with personal notes of interest. A copy of the first edition of this publication was submitted to a recent meeting of the committee of the R.S.A. when it was siated that 120 copies had been typed and it was agreed to maintain the service which it was considered would prove of interest to Feilding boys. Feilding railway station returns for the week ended March 4 disclose that 22,778 sheep and 166 head of cattle were handled, figures which record a particularly busy period. For the corresponding period last year the sheep handled totalled 9000. Passenger traffic records a decided drop, there being a total of 355 compared with 858 for the same week last year. This, of course, arises from the travel restrictions and the figures reveal the extent to which such restrictions are operating. The intersection of Kimbolton Road with Manchester Street, otherwise the centre of .Manchester Square, appears to be generally acceptable as the best possible site for the proposed clock tower in Feilding. The Chamber of Commerce following its meeting recently has approached the Borough Council recommending that this site be approved. The decision of the council will be awaited with interest although its approval of the proposition is most likely, it is expected that arrangements will be put m hand shortly for an appeal to business interests and the public generally to provide the money for the cost of the tower which is likely to amount to £I3OO. A civic reception is to be tendered 1 all servicemen and women recently returned from the Middle Fast and Pacific, including repatriated prisoners of war, at ■ the Drill Hall, Feilding, on Tuesday evening next. Citizens are invited to make a | point of attending this reception and might also "assist by making known to the town clerk (Mr. C. H. Tate) the names of all those now on furlough from overseas to enable official invitations to be sent out. It is known that there are in and about Feilding several men whose names have not been recorded and the civic authorities are most anxious to ensure that no one is omitted. The town wishes to do honour to both servicemen and women and the cooperation of everybody is desired to this end.
