Junior Chamber of Commerce

“Tlio senior Chamber of Commerce finds that the majority of its activities, of necessity, have a national outlook. The interests of the younger men in the junior chamber will be more of a local nature, and in Palmerston North there is a great scope for their activities,” said the president. of the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce (Mr. W. M. Sexton), when welcoming those present at a meeting held on Thursday night for the purpose of resuming the activities of the junior chamber, which has been in recess, because of war conditions, since 1940. Mr. Sexton addressed the meeting, relating the history of the movement, and giving an outline of its activities. Mr. F. G. Opie also spoke, pointing out that today's young men were the country’s coming leaders, and stressing the need of their taking part in public activities. It was decided that the junior chamber resume its work, and Mr. F. G. Parkinson was elected chairman. The possible future activities of the organisation were discussed, and among the subjects mentioned were repatriation, the establishment of a physical welfare centre in Palmerston North, alterations to the - municipal bus service timetable, tepid baths, the rat menace, arterial roads to the new railway station, the increase in university students’ examination fees, and vocational guidance. A letter was received from the Wellington junior chamber stating that the first national conference of junior chambers, which was to have fie on held in March, had been postponed because of the travel restrictions. The letter asked •for the appointment of delegates to the , conference, and it was agreed to leave I the matter till the next meeting. Methods of increasing the membership were discussed, and a campaign towards this end was organised.
