Work for Maori People

The new Under-Secretary for Native Affairs, Chief Judge G. P. Shepherd, speaking at the farewell to the retiring Under-Secretary, Mr. O. N. Campbell, said that he felt there was much work to be done for the Maori people. At the moment they appeared ready and willing to pursue the path of progress which should lead to their fullest absorption into the economic structure of the community. The happiest results in that respect could be obtained by an understanding of and sympathetic approach to the peculiar problems and difficulties which the Maori was required to overcome in. the transition from his own hereditary culture to an alien culture and way of life. in his opinion the Government and people were deeply conscious of tlieir duties and responsibilities to the Maori people. The glorious page in history written by ; the courage and lighting qualities of j the Maoris of all services inspired him with the belief that the Maori would *>lay his part just as importantly in the arts of peace.
