General Notes

As only five nominations were received for the Pahiatua Licensing Committee no election is necessary. The nora- 1 inations received were Messrs H. P. f Horne and P. M. Kenny (Woodville), and Messrs J. Carston, J. S. Williams j and P. Mcllvride (Dannevirke). Special services will be held in the 1 Salvation Army Hall to-morrow, it be- j ing Harvest Festival Sunday. Major and Mrs Thorne from Masterton will bo leading the meetings, and there will be topical addresses, music and singing, j On Monday evening there will be a Harvest programme, and the produce . will be sold. An invitation is given to | all to attend these meetings. I Habits as a general rule are usually ] regarded as the prerogative of animals and birds but man himself is not with- ] out the habit of forming habits. One very noticeable case in point is that ot - a certain Papatawa resident who with- , out fail every Friday evening comes into Woodville in his car and always parks that vehicle in exactly the same spot. Never has his car been seen a yard from this self-same place. As he comes to town very early he has no trouble in finding his parking area unoccupied. One wonders what would happen if, for some unforseen reason, somebody else ‘jumped’ his claim. Woodville might be regarded by its inhabitants as offering small chance ot anybody becoming lost in its few streets but to at least one visiting overseas serviceman returning to his host’s home after an evening out, the town must have assumed the proportions ot little old New York itself. Try as he might he could not orientate himselt and the Railway Hotel for some unknown reason insisted on changing places with the Masonic. Finally in desperation our American friend fixed his gaze on the only visible light una made for it finishing up at the Railway signal box where he solicited the help of the attendant who quickly headed him in the right direction. All soldiers are naturally proud of the units they served with but one returned Woodville gunner can point with no little pride to the prowess of] some of his old unit officers, llis own j troop commander who, when the unit was formed in May, 1940, was a First Lieutenant, has just returned home as a Lieut.-Colonel with the D.S.O. award. His regimental commanding officer on tho capture of the late Brigadier Miles was promoted to C.R.A. (Commander Royal Artillery) and shortly after was posted to brigadier rank. He also won the D.S.O. Finally the regimental Padre has recently been mado Senior Chaplain to the N.Z. Division in tho Middle East and has been promoted to First-Class Chaplain with equivalent rank of full colonel. This is tho first time there has been a first-class chaplain with tho New Zealand Forces. This is surely a unique unit record Troop Commander to Regiment Commander, Regiment Commander to Brigade Commander, and Regimental Padre to Senior Division Chaplain. Perhaps the feat of a man who started off as a batman and recently returned home as a Captain and Troop Commander is also worthy of mention.
