Feilding Gifts for Churchill Auctions

Packed by Mr W. E. Carthew, FeildIng’s final box of books for the Churchill Auction has just been railed to Wellington. The Dominion organiser Mr P. A. Lawlor has acknowledged that every gift from Feilding has been worth while. He has also indicated tliat the Patriotic Fund Board hopes to conduct the auction shortly. Mr C. R. H. Taylor, librarian of the Alex Turnbull Library in Wellington has completed a most interesting booklet giving the history of the famous volume tliat is the corner stone of the auctions. It is being artistically printed and will be on sale shortly at a popular price. Late contributions to the auction include an Arrowsmith Atlas of the world printed in 1832 containing maps and drawings reproduced from steel engravings. In this Atlas Australia is named New Holland, Tasmania as Van Dicmans land and New Zealand as New Zeeland. air Luxmore has presented Geo. W. M. Reynold’s very lengthy novel (nearly half a million words) in two volumes, “The Mysteries of London” profusely*illustrated from woodcuts. This work has long been out of print and the author, a very radical journalist and author founded Reynold’s Weekly newspaper, flourished in Charles Dickens period and was a Dickens enthusiast.

Patriotic activities at Bulls are carried on with very marked enthusiasm. On Monday last the local committee conducted a carnival with the objective of completing the town’s quota for the 1942 Appeal. A sum of over £7OO had already been collected and Monday’s effort resulted in over £350 being collected, thus providing a grand total of over £IOOO towards the Feilding and district quota. This splendid effort by the people of Bulls means that the town has exceeded its quota.
