Army Boxing
A regimental boxing tournament was held in the Opera House, when numerous hard fights were witnessed, - representatives of two infantry regiments taking part. Tho officials were:—-Referee, Mr. G. Watchorn; timekeeper, Mr. N. D. Stubbs; judges, Messrs T. Ross and E. Arnott. Arrangements for the tournament were in the hands of Lieutenant McWhinnle .and Second-Lieutenant Sheppard, and Mr. J. Purves was stage manager. A regimental band was present and played a variety of numbers. A special medal for the most scientific boxer was given by Mr. J. Edgeler and won by Private Winstanley (Taranaki). Results are as follow, all bouts being won on points unless otherwise stated:— Taranaki.—Light - heavy weigh t: L/Cpi. Davies 11.9 beat Pte. Couchman 10.13; Pte. Cook 12.13 beat Pte. Dowman 12.7; Pte. Winstanley 11.9 beat Pte. Casperson 12.1. Middleweight: Pte. Florence 11.0 beat Cpl. Hill 10.10. Welterweight: Cpl. Fitzwater 10. S beat Pte. Mumby 10.5; L/Cpl. Kelly 10.10 beat Pte. Skipper 10.2; Pte. England 9.13 beat Pte. Hammersley 10.6. Lightweight: Pte. Cuff 9.11 beat Pte. Crowe 9.9. West Coast.—Lightheavyweight: 2hd Lieut. Calkin 12.0 beat Pte. C road we II 11.0 (technical knockout). Middleweight: Cpl. Fleetwood 10.13 beat Pte. Crutchley 10.9; Pte. Matthews 11.1 beat Pte. Emia 11.0. Welterweight: Pte. Coughlin 10.4 beat 2nd Lieut. Watson 10.1. Lightweight: Pte. Larking 9.1 drew with Pte. Ballard 9.9. Featherweight: L/Cpl. O’Reilly 9.0 beat Pte. Stanford 8.10. Bantamweight: Pte. Pratt 8.7 beat Pte. Finlay 8.7. Extra bouts: Gnr. O'Connor (Artil lery) 10.8 beat L/Cpl Spearman (A.S.C.) 9.10 (technical knock-out); Gnr. Goldsack (Artillery) 12.1 beat Pte. Turner (A.S.C.) 12.10.
