Rebuilding of Council Chambers
PERMISSION TO BE SOUGHT The position forced on the Palmerston North City Council as a result of damage by the recent earthquakes to the Council Chambers was discussed at [a special meeting of tho council last night. Before the meeting were reports recommending that the front portion of j the building should be demolished and the rear portion (which is newer and not damaged to the same extent) strengthened. After discussion, the council passed the following resolutions:— That negotiations be entered into with the Anglican Church trustees for the acquisition of one foot of land, with a frontage to Church Street for the purpose of strengthening the council premises. That approval be given to the followr ing:—(a) The demolition as soon as practicable of the damaged portion of the buildings, with a frontage of 44 feet to the Square and a depth of 66 feet, (b) The erection on the site of a i building of two stories, or more if justified, with a frontage of 6fl feet to the Square and a depth of 66 feet over one portion and a depth of 132 feet over the balance. That the Mayor (Mr. A. E. Mans* ford), Cr. J. Ilodgens, M.P., and the city engineer (Mr. J. R. Hughes) be authorised to proceed to Wellington to interview the Minister of Internal i Affairs, the chairman of the local Government Loans Board and the Building Controller, and report to a later meeting. That in view of the suggested use of the library newspaper room for the temporary use of the city, gas and 'electrical engineers and their staff, the Town Clerk, city engineer and the librarian be instructed to make inquiries regarding a temporary location for tho I newspaper room. ! ' The Railway Department announces that a new passenger service between Gisborne and Napier will commence on Monday next, a daily train (Sundays excepted) leaving Gisborne at 10.5 a.m. for Napier, connecting with the 4.24 p.m. train to Palmerston North and a train leaving Napier at 5.25 p.m., after , the arrival of the express train from • Wellington, and arriving Gisborne 11.5 p.m. Particulars are advertised in this issue.
