Palmerston North River Board

MEETING OF TRUSTEES i The Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansford) presided at yesterday's meeting of the Palmerston North River Board. The advisory engineer (Mr. E. Fisher) reported that he had inspected the accumulation of flood water on Mr. Anderson's land at Aokautere on the river side of the flood bank. He con- 1 tinued that the May flood in 1941 partly destroyed this .flood bank and tho spoil required to repair the damage had been taken from the river side of the bank causing a depression and consequent impounding of flood water. He suggested that an open drain, cut to the river would release the water and that a £l2 bridge of rough timber would meet Mr. Anderson's requirements. Mr. Fisher recommended an increase in the height of the part of the flood bank and land side slope because the July flood had overtopped a portion of the bank. The engineer 's suggestion concerning the drain was approved and also the | recommendation that the bank bo raised, this being subject to Mr. Anderson’s approval. Referring to the position at the old racecourse, the engineer recommended that the groyne destroyed by the July flood be not reinstated but that two spans should be added to the groyne j immediately above. He estimated tho I cost would be £2OO. It was agreed that the recommendation be given effect to. The reconciliation statement gave the information: Credit balance 1/4/42, £1274 16s Sd; receipts to 31/8/42, !£1953.1Gs Id; less payments, £1255 8s i Id, leaving a balance of £1973 4s Bd, ; plus £69 cash in hand and less £64 9s 7d unpresented cheques, leaving a credit of £1977 15s Id. Of £3050 rates struck £IBBO 7a 10d i have been collected. Arrears amount to £134 19s 2d. The Manawatu Golf Club wrote drawing attention to the fact that the Defence Department had taken some 3000 yards of shingle from the foreshore. The advisory engineer said it had been taken after consultation with the [River Board and that the removal of the shingle did not constitute a danger to adjacent properties. The letter was received and the Mayor is to interview the president of the Golf Club concerning the position.
