Notes of the Day
Fine weather prevailed in Feilding yesterday when some sunshine assisted towards turning the edge of the moderate cold southerly wind. The Armed Forces Appeal Board which sat in Feilding yesterday under the chairmanship of Mr G. A. Monk dealt with a large number of applications for the release of soldiers from camps to assist in primary production. A prominent link with the early sawmilling days of Feilding was severed yesterday by the death of Mr Albert j Adsett of Reid’s Line, Aorangi, in his 75th year. A son of the late Mr Henry Adsett the pioneei of Adsett’s sawmill which flourished as the near-by bush fell to the axe, the deceased was long associated with the industry and subsequently engaged in farming activities at Aorangi. He is survived by his wife and two sons, Messrs Henry Adsett, Wairoa, and Verne Adsett, Palmerston North, and three daughters, Mesdames jR. J. Bowie (Beatrice), Palmerston ] North, Hogg (Ivy), Taumarunui, aud R. H. Ross (Elsie), Taumarunui.
In consequence of adjustments in the proposed jirogramme of speakers, called for by the National Broadcasting Board,, the Rev. W. T. Blight of the Feilding Methodist Church will not. now speak at the Christian Order Crusade in Christchurch next month. The Rev. Blight was one of eight speakers originally selected from throughout the Dominion to deliver special broadcast addresses but since the selection circumstances have arisen requiring an adjustment and there will now be but four speakers, namely the Rev. Professor Ryburn of Dunedin, Professor Sinclaire of Canterbury College, Archdeacon Bullick of Wellington and the Rev. Dr. J. J. North of Auckland.
Yesterday’s - street day and Patriotic shop appeal in Feilding resulted in a sum of £lO4 8s being collected. For this splendid resuit congratulations are certainly due to the members of the Feilding Women’s Patriotic Committee who have consistently sacrificed both time and freedom to further every phase of patriotic work in the town. Yesterday’s appeal was materially aided by the presence of the band of the Ist Welling-ton-West Coast Regiment which supplied martial music through out the day. Citizens certainly enjoyed the inI spiring music and appreciated very much tho privilege of hearing this splendid combination. Members of the band were entertained at luncheon by members of the W.W.S.A. of Feilding and during their visit to the town were the guests of the Borough Council. Before the end of September it is intended to organise further street days with the object of realising Feilding’s quota. The two special efforts so far held towards this end have resulted in a total of £174 being realised and this figure is encouraging to the Patriotic Society since it is ahead of estimated receipts.
