News of Alan Loveday
\ Writing to the secretary of the Alan Loveday Trust Fund (Mr. J. P. MeDavitt), Mrs. L. Loveday states: “It jwas very pleasant to receive a letter from good old Palmerston North once more. Alan and I often have a good old chin-wag about it and wonder how everyone at home is getting on, also our friends up and down the country. One thing we notice particularly here is the difference in the air war. A year ago German bombers were over practically every night, either visiting coastal districts or passing over on their way inland. This year the sirens sound very rarely and every day dozens ot bombers and fighters (ours, thank goodness!) roar over on the way over the Channel, etc., for daylight sweeps. You will be wondering about our change of address (Felpham, Sussex). Mr. and Mrs. Sammons have gone back to live in London as teaching at the Royal | College takes up most of his time, and train services have been curtailed. At present we are renting an unfurnishe flat as it is cheaper to keep house than to board. The N.Z. High Commissioner and Mrs. Jordan called to see us when they were down this way and Mr. Jordan is anxious to do what he can to help Alan’s career later on. Alan meanwhile continues to sprout, and now towers over me by at least a couple of inches. He is keeping very fit and looking forward to bathing this summer. Mr. Sammons understands that any subscription towards Alan’s violin is not possible and he is quite sure he can raise the money among his friends here if Alan plays at one or two private receptions later on. Kind regards to all our friends in New Zealand.”
Soup For School Children. j For some time 80 pupils of the Macandrew Intermediate School, Dunedin, have been receiving half a pint of hot soup daily for a nominal charge of a penny. The smallness of tho charge has been possible because all the vegetables used in the soup have been grown by the pupils in the school gardens, and the soup is made by the pupils attending the school’s home science department.
