Coupons Restrict Patriotic Effort
There is evidence that the restricting influence of the coupon system is stifling patriotic effort in some quarters. This was reported at Wednesday’s meeting of j the Wellington Provincial Patriotic Coun--1 oil when Mr A. E. Mansford (Mayor of j Palmerston North) said that women’s j stockings, among other things, could no longer be raffled. Surely they should be allowed to raffle. goods when it was for patriotic purposes. The hon. secretary (Mr Vincent Ward) said that his experiences had been the same. 'T gave permission to people *o raffle, a bag of sugar and a bottle whisky among other things,” he said, “and was told later that X had to pull them out.”
Mr Mansford said the coupon system was also interfering with the sale of goods in the patriotic shops all over the country, as people were not likely to use their coupons unnecessarily to buy something they might fancy In a patriotic shop.
