Tributes to the services rendered by Mrs. M. Aitchison, who resigned during the year, as a teacher in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Sunday School for a period of over 40 years, were expressed by speakers at the annual meeting of the congregation on Wednesday night. The appointment of Mr Joseph Patrick McMahon-Box to be Resident Commissioner of Niue, Judge of the High Court of the Cook Islands, and Collector of Customs and Postmaster of Niue since April 13 was Gazetted last night.—Press Association. Constable E. E. Strawbridge of Wanganui and who was for somo five years stationed in Feilding has been notified of a transfer to Auckland with promotion lo Sergeant. Constable Strawbridge was in Feilding from 1937 to 1942 and proved a capable and popular officer. He leaves for the north in about a week’s time. The death has occurred of Lieut.Colonel James Armstrong at his residence in Dannevirke. Colonel Armstrong was born in Akitio and educated at Nelson, Otago University and University College, London. In 1905 he took up a sheep farm at Glengarry, where he remained until 1920, and afterwards he acquired the Maungataniwha station, Wairoa. During his stay in London he joined the King’s Colonial Yeomanry and on his return to New Zealand ho commanded E Squadron of the Wellington Mounted Rifles with the rank of captain. He saw service in Egypt during the Great War, commanding the 9th Squadron for some months and later the 2nd Squadi*on. On his return he commanded the Wellington East Coast Mounted Rifles, retiring with the rank of lieutenant-colonel. As a footballer ho played for Nelson College, Otago University and Otago Province, later representing the University College Medical School, London. Ho was the first president of the Dannevirke A. and P. Association and a member of the Waipawa and Dannevirke County Councils, a Past Master of Lodge Rawhiti, president of the Dannevirk© Racing Club for several years, and a member of the Hawke's Bay Racing Committee and the Racing Conference. Deceased is survived by his widow, one son—Air. R. A. Armstrong (of the R.N.Z.A.F.), and two daughters. Mrs. Humphrey Bayly (Nuhaka) and Miss J. Armstrong (Dannevirke). Two sons—John and James—predeceased him some years ago. Mr. Frank Armstrong, of Awitio, is a brother.
