Escapee Given Month’s Imprisonment
Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Jan. 4. Pleas of guilty and an appeal for leniency, were made by Raymond Patrick Letton, aged 33, a plasterer, when he was charged in the Police Court with being an incorrigible rogue in that he escaped from a place of lawful confinement before the expiration of the term for which ho was committed. The police said that Letton was sentenced to 18 months ’ imprisonment in the Supreme Court last March, and on the night of November 4 he escaped from his cell at Rangipo prison camp, Tokaunu, after cutting out a window. Ho was recaptured by a constable at Kingsland on December 24. This was the second time Letton had escaped from custody. Letton told the magistrate, Mr. McKean, that lie tried to join tho Army and make a fresh start. “It is probably just as well you didn’t join tho Army,’* said Mr. McKean. “However, lam taking fsto account what you told me. On this charge you will bo sentenced to one month’s tluprisonment, to bo served at the expiry of the term you are now serving. ’ *
