Detective Shot By LILA. Suspect
TRAG-EDY IN CORK CITY Received Thursday, 9.30 p.m. LONDON, Jan. 4. Three patrolling detectives challenged two men they knew to be members of the I.R.A. One of the men immediately fired, hitting Detectiveofficer Roche near the heart. His colleagues were about to draw their revolvers when a crowd rushed to their assistance. Both men were detained. Detective Roche's condition is critical. The shooting occurred in Patrick Street, Cork’s principal thoroughfare. A later message states that Detective Roche died at 7.30 a.m.
