Barling and A. Gibson, of Feilding, ■were among recent visitors jto Wellington. After meeting his brother, MajorGeneral B. C. Freybcrg, Mr. C. Freyberg, North Street, accompanied by Mrs. Freyberg and family, left to spend a holiday at Kerikeri. i After visiting the Exhibition, Mr. and Mrs. E. Strange and Master C. Strange, of Auckland, are spending a few days with Mr. and Mrs. J. Noble, 'of King Street, Feilding. At Wellington on Wednesday a cocktail party in honour of Major-General B. C. Freyberg, G.O.C. the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force, was given by Major-General J. E. Buigan, Chief of the General Staff. The guests were received by Major-General Duigan and Lady Ostler. Mrs. F. G. Major, Argyle Avenue, and her dancing daughters, Misses Lorraine and Annette Major, leavo next week to spend six weeks in Sydney. The Misses Major hope to enlarge their dancing experience and attend a summer school organised by Miss Zelia Rave, president of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (stage branch), who, it will be remembered, visited Palmerston North a few weeks ago. Four Royal ladies are now entitled to wear uniform. The Queen, who, since the war began, has been made Oomniander-in-Chicf of tho Women’s Royal Naval Service, the Women’s Auxiliary Territorials, and the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force, is also Colonel-in- , Chief of the Queen’s Bays, the Black Watch, and the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. The Princess Royal is Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal Scots, the Royal Corps of Signals, the Indian Signal Corps, the Canadian Scottish Regiment and Commanllant of British Red Cross detachments. The Duchess of Gloucester is a Dame Grand Cross of St. John of Jerusalem, and the Duchess of Kent is Lady Superintendcnt-in-Chief of the Order of St. John of Wales. Forty members of the Special Force formed a guard of honour and drew the carriage from St. Peter’s Church, Dunedin, for the wedding of Ngaira Eleanor, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Keach, Dunedin, and Gunner James Lawson, elder son of Mr. John Darling, Palmerston North, and the late Mrs. Rubina Darling, Dunedin. The bride, who was escorted by her father, wore a charming gown, of magnolia satin, the long tulle veil being held in place with a topknot of cream roses. She also wore a locket which had belonged to her grandmother. Her bouquet was a shower of cream roses. The bridesmaid was Miss Veronica Smith, Wellington, a cousin of the bride, who wore an early Victorian frock of Margaret Rose stiffened net and taffeta with matching bonnet.
Of unusual interest was the pretty Maori wedding celebrated at the bride’s home, Greytown, on Christmas evening, when Horiana Gwendoline Pamela Boyd was married to Joseph Haeata Tapinc, Takapau. The bride’s uncle, Rev. Apostle Hector Manihua, of the Ratana Church, performed tho ceremony. Tho bride is a great-great-granddaughter of tho late chief Hoani Rangitakaiwaho, Papawai. Her father is a cousin of Sir Apirana Ngata, and son of tho lato Mr. G. G. Boyd, of Silverford, Napier. Her great-grand-mother was Ngahoari, a daughter of To Tahana Turoa. The bridegroom is the only son of Makere Naera, and Mika Haeata Tapinc, grandson of To Paea Hercmia and Tapino Haeata, Wairoa. The matrons of honour who attended the brido were Mrs. Manihera and Mrs. Mark, both in full Maori dress.
