RAILWAY LINES BUCKLE UNDER HEAT United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. Received Thursday, 12.5 a.m. MELBOURNE, Jan. 3. The hottest day of the summer was experienced to-day, when tho city temperature reached 106 degrees. After a comparatively cool night a hot north wind arose in the early morning and by 9 a.m. the temperature was 90. High temperatures prevailed all over Victoria. By 6 p.m. a cool change occurred, the temperature dropping about 20 degrees in 10 minutes. More hot weather is forecast and serious grass fires axe expected later if the exceptionally hot conditions continue. The heat to-day buckled several chains of the Mornington railway line so seriously that a special race train was held up and the passengers had to continue their journey by car. Yesterday, when the temperature was only 101.4, Melbourne used 145,612,000 gallons of water.
