Britain has closed Hong Kong harbour as a “ necessary defence measure” after an offshore patrol sounded an alarm the cause of which is not disclosed. Ships of all nationalities are forbidden to enter or leave pending further orders. The Admiralty also withdrew two gunboats from the Yangtse patrol leaving only three of the original thirteen.
