“Joy Night” at Melody Dance Club
The Cosmopolitan Hall presented a very bright appearance on New Year’s night, when the Melody Dance Club opened the 1940 dance season. The hall was prettily decorated by Miss Win Hubbard, the organiser, ’with Oriental festoons around the walls, while over the entrance hall doors were turquoise blue fringed streamers, and suspended ! from the lounge-room door a large silver bell. Coloured electric bulbs were hung above the bell. The attendance was very large and many attractive and pretty frocks were worn. A professional orchestra of four played delightful melodies, and Mr. G. Dawson assisted byplaying an extra, and also gave a specialty tap-dancc, both being appreciated. The evening took the form of a “joy night,” squeakers ond streamers being distributed amongst the happy gathering, which was thoroughly enjoyed byall. Several novelty dances, including the “Lucky Leap Year” dance, caused much amusement. During the holidays Mr. Frank Parker, of Wellington, capably carried out the duties of M.C. Opportunity' was taken during the evening by the M.C. to bring Miss Hubbard into the dance hall, when she was presented by little Miss Margaret Alderson with a gift and also a beautiful floral bouquet tied with pink ribbons. Miss Hubbard returned thanks, at the same time mentioning it was certainly a very pleasant surprise, and slie wished everyone a happy and prosperous New Year. Boxing night was also a gay time spent by the Melody Danco Club. Miss Margaret Alderson, who is now very well known to the public for her singing, delighted patrons with “Once When I was Young,” tC My Own,” and “The Drummer Boy'.” Sho was loudly encored for her numbers. The singing of “Auld Lang Syne” and the National Anthem brought the ever popular Melody Dance Club’s dances to a close each evening.
