Feilding Post Office
VOLUME OF CHRISTMAS BUSINESS DECLINES INCREASE IN REVENUE REVEALED The volume of Christmas business handled by the Feilding Post Office registered a decline compared with that handled for the Christmas period, 1938, according to information supplied by the Postmaster, Air. A. Orr, yesterday. “Wo did not get the parcel business on this occasion such as was handled in previous years—in fact, both parcel and packet business, fell away,” he said. Actually the mailroom handled approxi mately 300 bags fewer than the total dealt with during Christmas, 1935. However, said Air. Orr, the service was favoured by fine weather and this fac tor, which is always a material consideration during the Christmas rush, enabled the postal staff to cope with the deliveries expeditiously. All worked exceedingly well and there was no hold up or delay in handling the despatches. The fall off in parcels and packets was not an experience peculiar to Feild ing and it appeared that more householders made use of Christmas card.than usual. The toll business, said Air. Orr, stood to the Department better than anything, the number handled during the rush period being less than 100 fewer than for 1938. Telegram transactions showed a drop, the outward messages totalling 104(3 compared with 1400 for Christmas week, 1938. In the case of inward messages theso showed a drop from 1500 handled in Christmas, 1938, to 1300 handled in the period just closed. While the volume of business declined the revenue showed a marked increase, this being accounted for by the higher charges. With the cost of sending telegrams, as well as all postages, increased, the revenue showed an increase of over £250.
