Girl Collapses in Surf
FATALITY AT CASTLECLIFF Per Press Association. WANGANUI, Jan. 1. W hile enjoying the surf at CasUecliff on Saturday afternoon Miss> Hilary Cameron, aged 20, of Oamaru, collapsed and died shortly afterwards. She was attended to promptly by members of tho Castlccliff surf section of the Royal Life Saving Society, but it was found that her collapse had been due to a stroke and her death was in no way due to drowning. She died very soon after having been carried from the shaliow water. Miss Cameron is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stuart Cameron, formerly of Wanganui and now of Oamaru. Her mother has been living in Wanganui for some time and Miss Cameron came here on holiday. ELDERLY MAN SUCCUMBS IN SURF GISBORNE, Jan. J. A bathing tragedy occurred on the Wainui beach on Sunday afternoon, the victim being David John Cumming, aged 62, a married man and a farmer. The body was recovered by the Wainui Surf Life Saving Patrol. The victim was bathing with his sons who had difficulty in keeping their feet in the heavy surf running.
The father was being swept out into deeper water and one son (W. Cumming)
struggled ashore in a semi-exhausted condition, tho other son remaining supporting his lather who apparently suffered a fatal heart attack by the shock of being carried out. Deceased was born in Tasmania and came to New Zealand 40 years ago. He had a brother, Mr. T. W. Cumming, of Auckland.
