Mussolini and Pope
DELICATE SITUATION OVER PEACE AIMS United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyrigh t. Received Monday, 6.30 p.m. NEW YORK,( Dec. 31. Mussolini's visit to the Popo will raise delicate problems, says the Vatican City correspondent of tho New York Times. For instance, the Pontiff's five peace points announced after his talk with the King. It is taken for granted that he discussed them with the Italian monarch, but most Vatican authorities think Mussolini will not agree to the points since the Fascist regime still sustains the principle of living space and a full revision of treaties, and is completely opposed to tho League of Nations. Nevertheless it is felt that in time the Italian Government can be won over to the Pope's views despite the fact that his Holiness is clearly working to detach Italy from Germany, while Mussolini lias shown that he intends to support the Axis policy if feasible. Tho New York Times' Rome correspondent says it is learned that Herr Mackensen is reporting to Hitler on what must seem to Germany an alarming extension of the good relations between Italy nnd the Vatican. Informed circles generally consider that the Pope is making a determined effort to separate Italy and Germany.
