Sports Writer Found Guilty Of Racing Rule Breach
The Judicial Committee of the Dunedin Jockey Club met on Wednesday at the request of the stipendiary steward, Mr. C. F. Hartland, to consider a paragraph which appeared in the Evening Star, Dunedin, on December 26, in which it was stated: 4 ‘ln Australia jockeys who take wroug positions at tho barrier are subject to a severe penalty, but in the Otago district there aro one or two jockeys who make a practice of edging in towards the rails, and apparently get away without any reprimand. fcJeverai breaches of this rule went unchecked by the authorities at Wingatui on Saturday.* * It was unanimously resolved that Mr. W. A. Saunders, sporting writer of the Evening Star, and writer of the paragraph, was guilty of an offence under Rule 338 of the Rules of Racing regarding wrongful information detrimental to racing; but the question of a penalty be adjourned until January 26. Rule 338, sub-clause h, of the Rules of Racing, under which action was taken, provides that 1 * every person commits a corrupt practice within the meaning of these rules who in New Zealand or any other country wilfully and corruptly supplies any false information, or makes any false declaration, respecting any matter connected with racing, or directly or indirectly in any manner procures, instigates, or aids or abets the supplying of such false information or the making of such false declaration by any other person.**—Star-Sun.
