Obituary

MR. JOHN H. THOMAS, MAKINO There passed away on December a very old and much respected resident of Feilding, Mr. John Henry Thomn.-, of Makino Road, in his 87th. year. Death took place in the Palmerston North Hospital after a short illness. The late Air. Thomas was born at Pcnryn, Cornwall, and came out to New Zealand in 1875 in the ship Carnetic. lie later took up residence in Feilding,* where he resided up to the time of his i death. Long before the railway passed through Feilding the late Air. Thomas joined tiio permanent staff of the railways as a surfaceman, retiring 26 years ago. He was a devout Salvationist of the Feilding corps for 55 years and for 3 5 years held the position of treasurer of the local corps. lie also took a very keen interest in lodge affairs, being a member of the Ancient Order of Foresters. Before sailing out to New Zealand, the late Air.. Thomas saw considerable service in H.AI.S. Agincourt, a training ship of the Imperial Navy which is still afloat. Air. Thomas leaves a family of three daughters and two sons, namely, Alesdanies I\ ' Cafinan, H. Packer and C. Jacobsen (all of Feilding) and Aiessrs. W. 11. Thomas (Feilding) and J. W. Thomas (Napier). A younger son, Mr. J. Tho.mas, gave his life for King and j country in the Great War. There arc also .14 grandchildren and 52 greatgrandchildren.
