AUCKLAND HAVE ADVANTAGE OVER WELLINGTON Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Dec. 26. The third day’s play in the Plunket Shield cricket match between Auckland and Wellington to-day swung the game in Auckland’s favour. With nine wickets down for 254 Cowie and Cleverly made a spirited stand for Auckland’s last wicket, carrying the total to 270 before Cowie was bowled by Pritchard w'ho again bowled splendidly lor Wellington, securing six wickets for 06 runs which gave him 10 wickets for 311 runs for the match. Asheuden also bowled well in taking four for 83. Wellington were faced with the task of making 247 runs to win, but found tho going hard. So well did Cowie, Matheson, Cleverly aud Weir bowl that only 51 runs were scored in 80 minutes before lunch. A good stand by Hep burn aud Tindill put on 07 for tho second wicket, Hepburn reaching 55 and Tindill 29. The Auckland bowlers then called the tune and at tho tea adjournment seven wickets were down lor about 140 runs. Fortuno then favoured the Wellington team us shortly after tho resumption of play a heavy shower relayed play until 5.24 p.m. Tho rain made the wicket dead easy. Tho foothold was insecure and tho ball greasy. When stumps were drawn at 0 o’clock Wellington had seven down for 163 runs, Wilson uud McLeod having put ou 35 for the eighth wicket. There should be an exciting finish when play resumes to-morrow morning as Wellington still require S 3 runs to win with three wickets in hand.
