From Our Own Correspondent. Mr. J. Burch of the teaching staff of the local school, who has been transferred to I Blenheim, left for Wellington on Monday. He will spend a few days in the southern city, and then go north to visit his home at Onerahi, near Whangarei. I Mr. Norman Hyde, of Marton, who has [been conducting a series of Sunday lec- | tures, concluded his visit to Shannon last ' Sunday, and left for Marton after the | meeting. Mr. Alan Bartlett who was assisting Mr. Hyde in his work, also left for Marton on Monday afternoon. | The friends of Mr. Cliff Hook and family will regret to learn that, following a • sudden illness, he was removed to the I Palmerston North hospital on Monday evening. [ Competitions run at Mangaore for the patriotic funds resulted as follows:—Bed- ! jacket, Mrs. J. Kilminster; socks, Mr. K. Mitchell. Children’s Concert at Mangaore I The social hall at Mangaore had been gaily decorated by Mrs. F. Tregarthen and • helpers, for the children’s concert which I took place last Friday night. There was a large crowd present, and all thoroughly enjoyed the programme provided by the children, the chief items being, a play by j the cubs, a camp fire scene by the scouts, and an Empire tableau. Mrs. Wallace Smith played the accompaniments. Supper was served, and the conclusion of this, Mr. J. Ostler, president of the social club, thanked all those who had given ' t heir services, and others for their attendance. Placed in a corner was the traditional Christmas tree bedecked with decorations and presents for every child tip to primary school leaving ago, and Mrs. W. S. Cameron and Mrs. R. Graham were responsible for arranging this, and Father Christmas arrived in person to distribute the gifts. A dance concluded the evening. Party and Recital As is her usual custom each year, Mrs. R. R. Bind gave a children’s party at her home, Vance street, (on Wednesday afternoon), for her pupils, who later entertained guests of Mrs. Bind’s including, besides the pupils’ mothers, local friends and Mrs. I. Rickard and Miss Joan Paton of Palmerston North. Winners of the competitions were Ted Barber and Merle Hook. A treasure hunt took place, each child eventually finding its assigned present. Meanwhile the adults were engaged in a competition won by Mrs. H. G. Beng Ward, and in chatting over the teacups in the drawing room. Mrs. Bind’s pupils presented a programme of music. At intervals items were given by Miss Joan Paton, (’cello accompanied by Mrs. Rickard on the piano), Mrs. S. W. Barber (songs, accompanist Mrs. J. T. Bovis), a musical monologue and a recitation by Bois Lind. ■ The recital was as follows:—Duet, Joyce • Sou thee and Mavis Bepper; solos, Vivien Munford, lona Semple, Graham Edwards, Mavis Easton, Joyce Southee, Eris Brown, Mavis Bepper, Ted Barber, Helene CronL quest, Merle Hook and Bruce Bind; duets, ■ Merle Hook and Deirdre Beng Ward, Vivien Munford and Merle Hook, Mavis East- • on and Mrs. Bind; trio, lona Semple, Gra- » ham Edwards, and Bruce Bind. After . Mrs. Bind had expressed her thanks to the parents for their cooperation and help, , and to Mrs. Barber and Mrs. S. B. Graham ‘ for assisting her with the party, she proceeded to present the following prizes:— . Progress (for those who did not do an ex- . amination), Vivien Munford; highest 1 marks in theory examinations, Ted Barber. Certificates were presented to Rich- ; ard Bind, (senior practical 1938), Deir- { dre Beng Ward (junior practical 1938), Merle Hook (junior theory 1938), Ted Barber (preparatory theory 1938), lona Semple - j and Graham Edwards (initial, practical 1 1933), all being obtained in the Trinity College examinations. Competitions certificates were gained by lona Semple, (solo under 10), and lona Semple and Graham Edwards (duet under 10). On behalf of the pupils, Merle Hook made a presentation to Mrs. Bind as a token of appreciation for what she had done for them during the year, and wished her a merry Christmas. Mrs. Bovis on behalf of the mothers and , invited guests, thanked Mrs, Bind for inviting them*
