Manslaughter Charge Against Carpenter

SEQUEL TO QUARREL IN BEDROOM Ter Press Association. WELLINGTON, Dec. 20. Daniel John Mclntyre, aged 89, a carpenter, was charged to-day that he unlawfully killed Thomas Egan, there by committing manslaughter. He pleaded not guilty and was committed for trial. A further charge of assault so as to cause actual bodily harm was withdrawn by the police. Robert Zimala gave evidence of some foolery in a boarding-house bedroom which was followed by Mclntyre striking Egan a couplo of times on the chin and nose with his fist. Egan went to the bathroom to wash the blood off and on his return told accused he would get even with him if it took 20 years and also ordered accused into the street. Accused slapped Egan in the face and then hit him in the eye, accused falling to the floor with his head against the fireplace. To Mr. Hardie Boys (for accused) witness said when Egan ordered Mclntyre out it was with the object of fight- [ ing him, but Mclntyre said: “This place will do me.” Egan had a fight with another man in a bedroom about four months ago. Tho medical evidence was that accused’s left eye was ruptured on the inner side and had to be removed. Two days later deceased showed signs of meningitis and, alternatively, died from that disease. Bail was allowed in a surety of £250.
