Levin-Greatford Deviation Proposal
“PALMERSTON NORTH CANNOT BE SIDE-TRACKED" Mr. C. L. Hunter, M.P. for Manawatu, was ia attendance at the Foxton Borough Council meeting ou Monday, when the Mayor (Mr. M. E. Perreau) solicited his co-operation in having interest aroused in the movement for tho Levin-Greatford railway deviation. Mr. Hunter said he had already discussed the matter with several Ministers of the Crown. Everyone would agree, he said, that the railway had been put in the wrong place in the first instance, but Palmerston North was now a city and could not be sidetracked when it came to passenger trains. He thought, however, that a deviation would serve a useful purpose and result in economies in heavy haulage. It would open up good country and a good portion of the line was already constructed and could be used with consolidation. As far as the new Whirokino bridge was concerned, he had discussed the suggestion of making it suitable for both rail and road traffic with the chief engineer e of the Highways Board (Mr. Woods) and he had considered it would not present any great difficulties to widen the structure for that purpose. Mr. Hunter added t-hat he would again take the matter up with the Ministers for Public Works and Railways.
