MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. J The Kiwitea County Council met at Kimbolton yesterday, Cr. L. T. McLean j (chairman) presiding. There were also < present Crs. W. P. Shaw, J. A. T. j Brown, D. T. Couper, W. G. Clapham, 4 J. Beard, F. E. Tappin, J. H. William- J son, W. Hair. < Correspondence. J The following correspondence was < dealt with:— From Main Highways Board, advis- « ing that owing to the introduction of . the State arterial system involving ‘ extra financial commitments against the highways account, it was not possible for the board to approve of additional highways this year. The question of declaring further highways will receive consideration next year according to the position which then obtains. —Received. From the Medical Officer of Health, enclosing copy , of the Camping Ground Regulations, 1936. —Received. From the New Zealand Counties’ Association, and tho Manawatu Employers’ Association, with reference to industrial matters. —Received. From the Acting-Commissioner of Transport, advising that Regulation 11 of the Traffic Regulations, 1936, requires that motor vehicles not alre&dy examined; as provided for under the Transport Licensing Act, shall carry a warrant of fitness in the prescribed form, and disclosing a date of examination not earlier than six months before such use.—Received. From the Cheltenham Hall committee complaining of the condition of the approach to the hall.—Resolved that Mr. Tappin and the overseer meet the committee to ascertain what was retired. County Finances, The treasurer rej>orted on the county finances us follows: County fund account, dr., £4243 15s 6d; employees' accommodation loan account, cdt.,£72o 9s lid; Kimbolton Cemetery account, . cdt., £ls 12s lOd; land fund account, edt., £177 10s; Rangiwahia Cemetery account, cdt., £6 8s 6d; Waituna Cemetery account, £3 2s lOd. Rate Payments. Reporting on the rate payments the treasurer stated as follows: General rates, struck £8135 8s lOd, paid £4436 ; 17s Od, outstanding at February 17 £3698 11s 4d; special rates, struck 1 £6599 7s lid, paid £3397 12s 3d, out- ' standing to' date £3201 15s Bd. Arrears ' (three ’years): General rates, £226 19s 3d; paid, £SO IB 3dr outstanding £176 1 18s sd; special rates, £32- j6s lOd, paid £56 5s 6d, outstanding £266 11s 4d. Overseer’B Report. The county overseer (Mr. F. H. 1 Eggcrs) reported as follows: Glioltenliam riding: The sections of - No. 377 and No. 553 main highways ’ have been kept iu good condition by ’ the grader; also Hayne’s line anil 1 Beaconsfield valley road. The rrndman 1 has attended to the usual maintenance * work throughout the riding. 1 Kiwitea riding: The roadman has ’ attended to the necessary work 1 throughout the riding. A start had 1 been made with the work of forming 1 and metalling the section of new road ' from the Te Awa bridge to the junction 3 with' Coulter’s line. Waituna riding; Grading work has r been carried out on the section, of the 1 No. 377 main highway and the Waituna J valley road. The contractor has made 3 good progress, delivering maintenance t metal on the No. 377 main highway, s Waituna valley, Kiwitea-Tapuae and t Mangapipi roads. The balance of tho ‘ jnetal should be delivered within, the 1 next fortnight. Tho roadmen have l attended to the necessary maintenance 3 work throughout the riding, as well as spoil for carting, filling and widening bend on the Kiwitea-Tapuae road, and taking delivery of maintenance metal. Ongo riding: The section of the No. 377 main highway has been kept in order by the grader, and earth filling work carried out. The roadman has been engaged in attending to the usual k maintenance work, and taking delivery h of metal. The contractors have comJ pleted tho work of deliverig mainte-
nance metal in this riding, KimboLton riding: The contractor ! has completed to work of carting out maintenance metal in the riding. The sections of the Nos. 52 and 53 main highways have been kept in order by the grader; also a number of roads other than main highways. The roadman has assisted with grading work, as well as attending to maintenance work throughout the riding. Peep-o’-Day riding: The roadman on, the eastern section of the riding has attended to maintenance work in his length, as well as taking delivery of metal. The contractor has delivered approximately COO cubic yards of | metal in the riding during the month. The roadman on the western section has attended to maintenance work, as well as repairing storm damage on the Mangapapa road. An early start will be made by the contractor delivering maintenance metal'on this length. Pakihikura riding: The roadmen have attended to usual surface work and opening up of water chuunels and culverts throughout the riding. On the Sandon Block road, an old wooden culvert has been replaced by 9iu. concrete pipes. A small washout on the road giving acess to Mr. Brown’s homestead has been repaired, and overhanging fern and tall grass cut back on this and the Sandou Block roads. Heavy grading work has been carried out on the Ohiugaiti-Pemberton road, in order to repair the damage to the surface caused by the recent storm water, and work of a similar nature is still in progress. The slips on the Mangarere roads i have been removed, several washouts repaired, and a small bridge strengthened. Kangiwahia riding: The roadmen have attended to the maintenance work throughout the riding; also assist-
ing with grading work and repairing storm damage in the Pakihikura ami Hautapu ridings. Kepair work has been carried out on the itewa track. Timber has been ordered for the protective fence in the Mangoira gorge. The roadman has attended to pot-hole repairs and cleaning out water-tables on the Main South road.
Hautapu riding: Extensive grading work has been carried out reconditioning the section of the No. 52 main highway damaged by the recent storms. With, the exception of several small washouts this road is now in tainy good order for traffic. A fairly large culvert recently washed out on the Potato road has been replaced by SOin. concrete pipes. On tho Upper Kawhatau, approximately 50 cubic yards ot maintenance metal has been delivered on the Pourangaki hill, to repair the damaged surfaces. The roads in tho Upper Kawhatau are at uresent in a reasonably good condition. The roadman is to level some of the rough sections of tho Auputa clay road. The grader would be working on roads in the Kawhatau valley in about a fortnight ’s time.
