Hawke’s Bay Swimming Championships
GISBORNE WIN HERALD CUP. (Special to “Times") NAPIER, Feb. 17. Miss K. Henderson, a pupil of tho Gisborne High School repeated her fine swimming of the previous day at the second night of tho Hawke’s Bay Swimming championships at the Napier Municipal Baths last night, when she 1 broke the records for the 50 and 75 yards schoolgirls’ championships, lowering the record in both heat and final of each race. In addition to this, four . other records were lowered, to make the meeting one of the most successful in regard to times recorded, for several years. In the 100 yards men’s championship R. Watkins (Mahora) lowered the record ; in the teams’ race, the Gisborne team beat the previous fastest time; and in the 50 yards breaststroke, Miss R. King (Napier Intermediate) and Miss O. Knight (Napier Convent) dead heated in record time. Miss Knight lin ished first in the swim-off to decide the title, but was disqualified, and Miss King’e time also lowered the reTho attendance at tho meeting showed a distinct improvement on that of the first night, and as the water was warmer and the weather milder, some more interesting swimming was seen. Many of the races produced exciting finishes, events being decided by a touch or a similar short margin. Gisborne won the Herald Cup with 47 points, Heretaunga (43), Te Awa (39) and Mahora (28) following. The Cooper Cup went to R. Watkins (Mahora), with S. Boardman (Te Awa) as runner-up. The Kirkley Memorial Cup went to It. Fox (Heretaunga), with Kells (Gisborne) second aud T. Clay (Napier) third. Trophies were presented to Gisborne by the president of the Hawke’s Bay Swimming Centre, Mr A. 1. Rainbow. He referred to the high standard of junior swimming shown by tho great i number of records broken in that section of the meeting. The Sweyn and Herald Cups were then presented to Mr H. Holmes, captain of the Gisborne team. The dead heat in the 50 yards schoolgirls' breaststroke iu record time, necessitated a swim-off to decide the title. The swimmers, C. Knight (Napier Convent) and R. King (Napier Intermediate) swam hard, for Miss Knight to touch first, but was disqualified for not I swimming squarely in the water. The time, 46 3-ssecs, was a record.
