Papatawa
(From Our Own Correspondent) The district is still being treated to very unseasonable weather, having had very heavy rain during the week-end and at present exceptionally heavy gales. There is still hay to get in and farmers aro having a very worrying time trying to get it stacked. The carpenters and painters have finished the work at tho school and the alterations have made a wonderful improvement to the building. The committee is now making plans to lay down an asphalt basketball court. Mr and Mrs Munro and family, who have been spending the school vacation at the Waltarere Beach, have returned to Papatawa. Wellington visitors to the district are Mrs Ben trice and her daughters, Barbara and Alison. Mrs U. Uarriock and her daughters, Beth and Margaret, who have been holidaying in Papatawa, returned to their home In Dannevirke on {Saturday. Miss Betty Brooks, of Mangatainoka, is visiting Mrs J. «. Nelson. The monthly meeting of tho Papatawa W.I. was held last Friday, when there was a fair attendance of members. Mrs A. Dickens presided and extended a New Year welcome to ail present. A vote of condolence was expressed to the members of the family .of the late Mrs Blbby, of Waipawa. As a mark of respect, members sang the W.I. song, “Comrades and Friends,’’ which was composed by the late Mrs Blbby. , It was resolved to send a letter of congratulation to Miss Spencer who had recently been honoured by his Majesty tho King. Jt was..decided to enter a court at. the Dannevirke Horticultural and Industrial Society’s annual show which will bo held next week. Nominations lor president and committee for the ensuing year were received. Tho retiring president will not bo a candidate this year. The election will take place at tho next meeting. The speaker for the afternoon was Mrs H. Paterson, who was given a very hearty welcome. Mrs Paterson spoke about her trip to America, and this was keenly followed by all present. The wish was expessed that members could have heard much more, but Mrs Paterson's time was limited. Members are looking forward to hearing more
at the fall-yearly federation meeting. The coompetition for tho day was the best bloom of scarlet geranium, and this was won by Miss Fades in the senior section, and Miss McLean in the Junior.
