SUB-CENTRE CHAMPIONSHIPS DECIDED AT SPORTSGROUND.

On Monday evening there was a fair number of spectators at the Sportsground to witness the usual weekly sports mooting. An added attraction was the championship events conducted 'by the Manawatu Sub-Centre of the j West Coast (N. 1.) Centre. Competitors i were present from Levin, Shannon and I Palmerston North. Unfortunately the j Levin members arrived too late to •compete in the first championship event, the half mile, which left only | three runners. However* they made up ! for this by taking first and second ! places in the one-mile championship. ! Four lady members of the Shannon Club were also present and competed in a 100yds. handicap, all running exceptionally well. Their appearance on the track in a neat costume of club colours was something that could be well copied by the men. The following are detailed results:— | Five-mile cycling handicap: Essex (215yds) 1, Rasmusson (300yds) 2, * Lawrence (scr) 3; eight starters; time, 12min. 35sec. j Ladies' 100yds handicap: Miss D. Carter (2syds) 1, Miss V. Young (2yds) 1 2, Miss Peterson (scr) 3. All are mem--1 bers of the Shannon Club. No time was taken. Half-mile sub-centre championship; Robinson (Kia Toa Club) 1, Scott (Kia Toa) 2, Young (Shannon) 3. The only starters. Time, 2.13 1-5. One-mile cycle handicap: Lawrence (scr) 1, Astiu (45yds) 2, Essex (45yds) 3. Eight starters. Time, 2.19 3-5. One-mile sub-centre championship: Morgan (Levin) 1, Penny (Levin) 2, N. Hearsey (Kia Toa) 3. Seven starters, Time, 5.7 1-5. One-mile cycle: This event was run under Olympic conditions, the timo for the last 220vds only being taken. Lawrence was first, time 12scc.; Astiu and Essex were equal second. 220yds handicap: Carter (18yds) 1. Miller (syds) 2, Dixon (scr) 3. Time, 21 2-ssec.
