“Old Hutch” Has Essence of Good Rich Humour
WALLACE BEERY’S TITLE ROLE IN HUMOROUS FILM
(Mayfair: Screening Wednesday Next). •’Old Hutch" is the story of tne man who is known in every town. There is more than mere wealth of humour in this new character who comes in the person of Wallace Beery. He is tho essence of rich, good humour, but beyond that he symbolises the easy tolerance, the quiet acceptance of fate, and in the .last analysis, the fiery individual who, when driven to fight, does it with his -vAole soul, his strong body and two good fists. Most people will recall the story of “Old Hutch." It is the account of a "no account” in the eyes of harsh crtics, but a lovabie man nevertheless. He is the laziest man in town and fishing is at once his business, his pleasure and his hobby. In his aimless wandering abount the country he stumbles upon a box containing a fortune in thousand dollar bills. Obviously, a man who seldom has tobacco money, cannot attempt to spend important money. Aud so "Old Hutch” goes to work on a farm iu order to make his fellow townsmen believe that ho is saving his cash. In that way, he figures, he may sooner or later try to cash one of those precious bills. But it doesn’t work out that way. The bandits who originally stole the money watch the old man and rediscover it in his cache. Then they force him to assist them in cashing it. That is what upsets their apple cart, for ‘‘Old Hutch” inadvertently causes a wreck during the pscape. The bandits arc captured and ho comes into the reward. Eric Linden aud Cecilia Parker, who appeared with Beery in Eugene O’Neill’s "Ah Wilderness!” provide the romantic touch in the new picture and do it with excellent taste. The supporting cast includes Robert McWade, Elizabeth Patterson, Caroline Perkins, Julie Perkins, Delmar Watson, Harry Watson, James Burke, Donald Meek and Jean Chatburn.
