“Remember Last Night?” Is Fascinating Mystery

CONSTANCE CUMMINGS, EDWARD ARNOLD LEADING PLAYERS (Kosy: Screening To-day.) In spite of her penchant for crime riddles, “Remember Last Night?” is the first movie of that description in which Constance Cummings has ever acted. She broke into the show business as a chorus girl, prancing in the front rows of such major Broadway at* tractions as “June Moon," and “The Little Show.” Mr Laemmle, Jr. however, visualized her as the ideal person to play in his film, version of the story, with certain superficial changes in makeup. That had more to do with tlie setting of the story than with the character of the part as will be explained. He was so certain that Constance Cummings was the right girl for the rolo that she was the second player selected in the haud picked cast of twenty. Edward Arnold was the only one chosen before Miss Cummings. Then came Sally Liters, Robert Young, Robert Armstrong, Gregory Ra toll', Reginald Denny, Louise Henry and the other supporting actors and actresses. Not one of these was tapped for the part by the casting director. Each was signed by Mr Leammle, Jr. himself. The first thing that happened to Miss Cummings when she reported for duty, was a haircut. That was because her customary coiffure did not match the I decor of the two hundred thousaud dollar Long Island country home that was built at the Universal Studio, as setting for the film. The architectural style of this ornate dwelling was based on Classical Greek motifs and all costumes, especially the women’s had to harmonize. They cut off Miss Cummings silky brown tresses short, very short, above her ear tops, and curled them in tight ringlets. With this hairdress, she wore an evening gown cut like the ancient draperies or chitons as they were called of the Athenian wome in the ago of Reticles. Her facial makeup was not changed to any marked degree, but she created quite a minor sensation by the way she put it on.
