Linking Up Power Schemes

PROGRESS IN THE SOUTH Per Press Association. INVERCARGILL, Last Night. The early linking up of the Southland power scheme with Waitaki generating station was foreshadowed by the Minister of Public Works, Hon. R. Semple, this afternoon. Plans aro well advanced, surveys of the route of the high tension lines are in hand, and tenders for tho poles have been let. Mr. Semple announced that for nine months of this financial year, tho ne; revenue from electricity in Southland had increased by £B3OO after allowing for abolition of meter rents and reduction of 7d units to G^d. “By way'of affording further concessions,” said tho Minister, “I have arranged that old age pensioners are to receive a supply on the basis of paying for what they use. They aro not to be /cquired to pay any yearly guarantee. The same privilege is extended to all schools and public halls which can be served from existing lines. ’ ’
