AID FOR SPAIN.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —The letters of your three correspondents on the above subject issue remind mo of the proverb, “He whom the gods would destroy they first make mad." P. J. Herlihy gives a long statement, in fact if one did not know tho real issues one would conclude that he had no more “horrors" left. Will your correspondent come to the point? Having sought by “red terror' > statements to prove that tho (JabuJlero Government of ►Spain is a terroristic Government which naturally he would not deal with under any circumstances he is recognising Franco aud the foreign mercenaries us tho proper Government. The German and Italian Fascist controlled States got in in advance aud gave recognition to Franco in a like manner some months ago. This gangster rule of Franco has not been recognised by the democratic countries, England aud France, yet youi correspondent says that to do anything through the {Spanish Government would embarrass and compromise the British Government. He is suggesting then I hat assistance be given to Franco, who is not recognised by the British Government;. 1 am thankful to know that he is not recognised Government and I hope J/.J.H. will not charge it with being Communist too. The other correspondent, “Plain Labour," is just a ‘ * baclter-up' ’ and fie, therefore, cuts no ice. He is steaming on poor coal. Now one thing strikes me. There are people who are prepared to endeavour the suffering musses are as usual the ing of the people of Spain. They recognise that the Spanish Government is the rightful authority and they are going to use that channel. That to recognise any other would bo an act of sedition and in international law would bo an uct of hostility directed against the lawfully elected Government. While P. J. Herlihy wastes time on these issues the suffering wasos are us usual the chopping block. Will he do something tor i recognise that he is aware of the great need. —I am, etc., “PETER."
