Noxious Weeds Menace in Oroua County
WARNING TO RATEPAYERS. The disevery of three vigorous plants of goatsruo growing on the roadside fronting his property at Taonui prompted Cr. A. Campbell, chairman of the Oroua County Council, to refer, at yesterday’s meeting of the council, to the necessity for ratepayers to keep all noxious weeds under control. Ho felt that it was time tho council took action in. the direction of warning ratepayers of their responsibility in the matter. Recalling that last year attention had been brought to the growth of noxious weeds in the Feilding saleyards and holding paddocks Cr. Campbell said that nothing had been done to remedy the evil and the position was nothing more than a scandal and a disgrace. *‘ I view this question of noxious weeds with some alarm,” he said ‘‘as wo are a fairly clean county and it is up to the ratepayers and farmers generally to protect not only their properties but the roadside as well. There was no goatsruo in tho county but unless steps were taken and the ratepayers warned, it was likely to take charge.’ ’ The county engineer (Mr R. L. Harding) stated that the roadmen and employees of the county had been instructed to closely watch the metal I dumps aud to destroy all signs of goatsrue. The seed was included among the metal taken from tho Manawatu river and tho metal dumps at Ashhurst had to be closely watched for new plants. Cr.
