ATMORE COMMITTEE REPORT MANY OF RECOMMENDATIONS APPROVED Tho resolutions and recommendations of the Atmore report on educational reorganisation in New Zealand (1930) were tho subject of a special report tabled at Wednesday evening’s meeting ! of tho Board of Managers of the ■ Feilding Agicultural High (School, j With tho object of ascertaining the views of post primary school authorities on the recommendations of the Minister of Education lust year invited an cx- ! pression of opinion on each of the recommendations and called for a report before the end of February as the Government intended to deal with the 1 whole question this year. Tho board proceeded to deal with several recommendations and dealt with them us indicated below: — 1. Termination of primary school course at 11 years.—Approved. 2. Age of attendance at school to bo raised to 15 years.—Approved. 3. intermediate classes to be part of the education system.—Approved. 5. Substitution of bursaries for ! scholarships. —Approved. 6. Curricula of all schools must include practical instruction in agriculture and allied subjects. —Tho board considered this to be iuipracticablo in the case of fuost town schools and that better results would bo obtained by a bursary system to enable town pupils to get their training at special schools in the country. 7. Unification of control of primary, secondary aud technical education. — Not approved. 8. Modification £ school boards (con- : sequential on No. 7). —Not approved. y; That the present divisions of inspectorate bo replaced by a single , inspectorate for all typos of schools. — No comment. 10. (1 to Aik) Rowers of proposed National Department of Education. — No comment. 1 10. (Xi i) Appointment of teachers rest solely with the Education Department. —Not approved. 12—15. No comment. 16. Individual progress cards, as in use in primary schools, to be extended to post primary schools with provision ' for school certificates. —Approved. 17. (B) University Scnools Board of studies to be set ux> and an accrediting 1 system to be introduced. —Approved, i 18. Uuivcrsary Bursary to oe revised and provision made for financial assistance as grants or loans to deserving students.—Approved. 19 —20. No comment. 21. Aledical examination of children to be extended to include all pupils in primary and post primary schools.— Approved. 22. Extension of school dental service.—Apxiroved. 23. Encouragement of open air schools. —Approved. 24. Relating to homo work.—No comment. 25. Manual training facilities for special class children to be extended. —Approved. 26. No Comment. 27 (A). Teachers to be free but not . compelled to assist in some form of religious instruction.—Approved. 29 —30. No comment. 31. Dominion to be represented at each Imperial Education Conference j exchange of teachers with overseas countries to bo foulilalia; liaison research officer to be appointed.—Approved. 32. No comment. 33 (A) Change over to principle of compulsory intermediate education to bo effected by immediate transfer to most suitable school.—Approved. 27 (b) Approval by Minister of Education of accredited persons to give religious instruction.-—Recommoiid that tho jiower of ax>proval bo left to school committees. 28. History, constitution aud objects of League of Nations to bo taught.— Approved. Mr W. A. Salt announced that at a meeting of the Executive of the Domion Federation of tho Schools’ and Committees’ Association on Tuesday evening a report on all fours with the abovo report was brought down. Tho terms of tho decisions announced above aro to bo communicated to tho Minister of Education.
