Women’s Institute

The monthly meeting of the Mangatainoka Women’s Institute was held last Thursday, Feb. 4, Mrs. Ross presiding over a good attendance. After opening as usual with the “Ode to Friendship,” the president welcomed all visitors and members. A letter of thanks was received from the secretary of the Leper Appeal Fund, for their donation of 10s. An interesting demonstration in brass work was given by Miss Cole, some very nice pieces of work being on display. The members took a keen interest, many expressing a wish to make same. This was followed by Mrs. Micheal giving a demonstration on quilting, which proved to be interesting and helpful. Mrs. Macrae Was the lucky winner of two guessing competitions. Afternoon tea was then served by the hostesses, Mrs. Kerrison, Mrs. L. Rusdcn and Mrs. Mathews. The most amusing event of the afternoon was an attempt to tear a camel from newspaper, this competition proving very popular and causing much laughter and merriment. The judge awarded Miss Pryde the prize. A letter was received from the links at Home thanking the Institute for the butter which arrived in time for their party. The competitions were as follows: Best scones (11 entries), Mrs. Cooper 1, Miss Pryde 2, Mrs. Ross 3; article from yard of britway (11 entries), Miss Fergus 1, Mrs. Cook 2, Mrs. Ross 3. The afternoon closed with the National Anthem, Mrs. Rusden being at the piano.
