Several Things Lacking

DANNEVIRKE COUNCILLER CRITICISES HIS TOWN Cr H. E. Hibbard, in tho course of some remarks at the meeting of the Dannevirke Borough Council on Monday evening said: “We have a progressive town, but all the same there are several things I don’t agree with. A lot of the tools which, the borough workineu have to work with are a disgrace.” He added that many of the implements were unfit to use and it was not a fair thing to ask the men to do a fair day’s work with them. There should be a check up on tho tools in the borough. “Anothor thing, our sign boards want attention, because they are perishing for want of paint,” -he said. He would like to see some attention give to the rest room at the cemetery. “Every man should have reasonable tools to work with,” said Cr. Hibbard returning to the question of the borough tools. “If we have not enough money to give them reasonable tools then we should get outl ” Referring to the camp site on the lower domain, which he considered one of the best in New Zealand, Cr. Hibbard said provision should be made for two or three more wash basinß there. There were also other matters requiring attention on the domain. He could not see where the money on the unemployed labour had been spent on the domain. The Mayor (Mr E. Gibbard) I think I have put you on the wrong committee. (Laughter). Replying to Cr. Hibbard, the town clerk said that last year £727 had been spent on tho domain for unemployed labour. Cr. Hibbard: Well I don’t know where it has gone. The Mayor: We didn’t pay any of that money. Cr Hibbard: Even if you didn’t pay it we are not getting anything for it. The Mayor: We were asked to find these men work in preference to allowing them to go on sustenance. Cr. Hibbard: That is a lot of money. I can’t see what has been done with it. Cr. L. W. Ward: Have you been all over the domain. Cr. Hibbard: Yes. I think I have seen everything. A lot of important work could be done there. Cr. C. W. Merrylees: Put in a recommendation to the Workß Committee. Cr. Hibbard: I will. Mention was made by Cr. Hibbard of a visit to tho abattoirs, which he considered was very creditable to the town.
