Palmerston’s Housing Scheme
PREPARATIONS UNDER WAY. PREMIER’S ANNOUNCEMENT. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Lust iglit. “Work in connection with the preparation of tho Orakei housing scheme in Auckland having been completed, the Dejiartment of Housing Construction is now proceeding to prepare schemes of housing for Christchurch, Dunedin, and Palmerston North,” said the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. Al. J. Savage) to-day. “The number of houses provided for in each of the contracts will be smaller than the number provided for iu the Wellington and Auckland contracts so as to facilitate a more rapid commence ment; but, of course, other houses wiP be ready by the time the initial groups are completed. “With Christchuich, Dunedin, and Palmerston North out of the way, it is hoped to move on to the provincial towns, such as Wanganui Napier, Hastings, Hamilton, Timaru, Invercargill, Gisborne, Mustertou, Nelson, Greyniouth, Oamaru. Iu all of those places the groups let will be ugain fairly small so us to facilitate a more rapid com meucement, leaving further groups to be prepared while tho initial contracts are under way “ Following on the places mentioned, there is a considerable number of town* of the Whakatanc, Patea, Thames, anil Ashburton size that will have to be dealt with. There is scarcely a town that is not clamouring for a scheme, and tho Department is spreading its aetivi ties as rapidly as is commensurate with efficiency.”
